Small Things To Do Before You Leave Your House For The Last Time

When your house has finally sold and you're packing up to move out, it's nice to leave the house in proper condition for the new owners. Ideally, you'll dedicate some time to giving the residence a thorough cleaning; while the new owners will likely want to clean upon arriving, they'll appreciate that you've made their life easier. Cleaning isn't the only thing you should do before you leave your house for the last time. Here are a handful of other suggestions that may seem small, but that the new owners will definitely appreciate.

Fill All Your Nail Holes

No one wants to move into a house with walls that are full of nail holes. When you take down any framed pictures and other items that have hung on your walls, a bunch of small (and not-so-small) holes will be left behind. Quickly address this issue by filling each of the holes with filler. Ideally, you can take a moment to paint over the filler when it dries, but if you're packing up at the last minute, you may not have time to do so. In this case, it's nice to leave any cans of paint behind that match the various rooms in your home so that the new owners can touch up these marks.

Take The Garbage With You

It's a dirty trick, quite literally, to leave a bag or two of garbage in the garage or side yard for the new owners to take to the curb on garbage day. Instead of doing so, make sure that you take any trash with you. There might be a fair bit, as moving day often yields considerable waste, but it's appropriate to always take your mess with you instead of burdening the new owners with it.

Straighten Up The Yard

The list of small details that you should manage as you get ready to leave your home for the last time extends beyond the home to your yard. At the very least, you should make sure that the yard is tidy and doesn't include any junk you've left behind. Additionally, if you own a dog, it's nice to go through the yard and pick up any dog waste. If you have the time, giving the grass a quick cut is something that the new owners will really appreciate. When they're busy getting moved in and unpacked, the last thing they'll want to do is cut the lawn.
