Buying A New Home And Have Uncontrollable Seizures? Tips To Purchase The Right One

If you have epilepsy and cannot keep your seizures under control, you need to consider some things if you are planning to buy a new home. It may take some time for your doctor to find the right medications for you to help keep control of your seizures. Having the right home can help reduce your chances of becoming injured. Below are some tips on things you should look for so you can get moved into your new home:

Open Floor Plan

An open floor plan is having most of the first floor of the home as one large room. This generally involves the kitchen, living room, and dining room. A plan like this would work well because if you are in an enclosed room and have a seizure your family may not find you quickly. If you are in an open floor plan, however, you would be noticed instantly so they could come to your side and help.

The bathroom and bedrooms would be separate from the other rooms. You could still choose a home that has wide hallways. This way if you fall in the hallway you have a reduced chance of hitting your head on the wall.

One Story

Because you have epilepsy you should choose a one-story home. If you are upstairs and have a seizure when everyone is downstairs they may not hear you. Stairs could also pose a danger if you are near them when you fall and have a seizure. You could easily fall down the stairs and become injured.

You can find one story homes that are just as large as two stories, as you can still have the same number of bedrooms and bathrooms.  You can also add onto a one-story home much easier than a two-story, as long as you have enough land to do so.

Bathroom

The bathroom should be large enough for you to install grab bars. This will allow you to grab onto something if you start feeling yourself have a seizure so you can get down safely. You should be able to install doors that can open outward so someone could get to you if you have a seizure.

A bathtub and shower combination would work well. You can also put grab bars here and have a thick bathroom carpet in front of the tub for you to step on so you do not slip and fall. You can install a sit-down chair in the shower no matter if you have a stand-up shower or a shower and tub combination.

Give a list of these things and more that you want in a new home and give this list to your real estate agent. This will help them find the perfect home for you. Contact an agent that works with new home buyers for more information and assistance.
