4 Subtle Ways Life Is Telling You To Go Out And Lease Office Space

Being self-employed is not always everything it is cracked up to be. While the concept of making your own hours and not having a boss to answer to can be appealing, there are drawbacks. Where to spend your eight working hours is often a dilemma. Sometimes you know exactly when it is time to move out of the garage and into a leased office space. Sometimes life needs to give you a little nudge.

The coffee shop staff is sick of you.

Working on a laptop from the back of the coffee shop seemed perfect when you were cubicle-bound, but now you just feel like you are there way too often. You could try to rotate between different locations, such as Starbucks on Mondays, followed by the independent shop on Tuesdays. Or, you could buckle down and realize it is time to rent an office space for your budding business.

The library staff thinks you work there.

You may or may not have re-shelved a book or two while taking a brain break. Hasn't everyone? While the library is a quiet place to work and they do have conference rooms you can use, having your own office space -- either leased or an office condo that you purchase -- is even better.

You haven't changed out of your pajamas in a week.

Pajamas are dream office attire and everyone knows it. Sometimes, though, you really need to put on pants without an elastic waist and go out in public. And, no — putting on a dress shirt with pajama bottoms in order to take a Skype call doesn't count as getting dressed up.

Your friends and family start every sentence with the words, "Since you're not busy ... "

Why is it that everyone thinks that if you work from home -- as a writer, an entrepreneur, or even a travel agent -- you are not busy? Why do they assume that you can watch their children, sign for their packages, or make their phone calls? It is rather strange, but it is not changing any time soon. If you lease an office space, even just a 500-square-foot space, you can easily set better boundaries. You just have to say that you will be "working at the office" and they will (hopefully) leave you alone to get your work done.

While working from home is often a bucket list item for many people, having a leased office space also has its perks. You can even still wear flip flops if you want to.
