You've graduated college

This is a milestone you may be feeling very excited to hit. Should you decide to purchase a home shortly after college and you are still single, you should keep in mind that your next step may be to meet the right person, get married, and start your family. So, you want to remember this when choosing a home, because you may want to get one that will be large enough to support a little family. 

You're expanding your family

A starter home is great for a small family just starting out and for many people, it will serve them well for many years if they keep their family small. However, if you find that your family has surpassed, or will soon surpass, the size, rooms, and features your current starter home has, then this is a great time to get out there and start looking for your next home. You'll likely want to focus on purchasing a home this time that will meet the needs of your family for the duration of your children's childhoods. 

Your children are out of the home

If you have come to the point where the last of your children have moved out to start their families, then you may find the house is bigger than what you now need. The upkeep and expenses of this larger home may be something you look forward to putting behind you. At this point, you may want to look for a smaller home that you can see yourself retiring in. While looking for this home, do keep in mind you may still want a home that will have space for the grandchildren when they come to stay with you for overnight visits. Depending on how many grandchildren you have, one spare room may be fine, or you may need more if you can see them getting used on those visits.
